About the formats
AVIF
AVIF is a newer format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP, but support in image editors, messengers and office software is still limited.
JPG
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files stay small, but it has no transparency and quality drops a little every time it is re-saved.

- Will converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?
- Slightly, because JPG uses lossy compression. At the default 90% quality the difference is hard to see, and you can lower the quality to make files smaller.
- Will the JPG file be smaller?
- It depends on the original. AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the JPG can be larger at high quality settings. The size before and after is shown next to each file; lower the quality if it is too big.
- Is transparency kept?
- No. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose PNG or WebP if you need to keep it.
- Does it work with animated AVIF?
- Animated AVIF files are converted to a still image of the first frame.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
