How to make the photo

Good to know

When printing, turn off “fit to page” and print at 100% (actual size), or the photos will not come out at the right size.
There is no background removal. Stand in front of a white or light, plain wall with no shadows for the best result.
Hold the phone about 1.5 m away at eye level so the face is not distorted.

Why head size matters

Official photo rules describe the print size and how large the head must appear, measured from the crown (the top of the skull, not the hair) to the chin. Getting the head size right is the most common reason photos are rejected, which is why the guides show the allowed range directly on the photo.

Korean passport / ID card (3.5×4.5 cm)

Size 3.5 × 4.5 cm; for online applications 413 × 531 pixels is recommended.
Head height from the crown (excluding hair) to the chin: 3.2–3.6 cm.
Colour photo taken within the last 6 months, facing forward, no hat.
Plain white background with no shadows, borders or patterns.

Korean resume photo (3×4 cm)

Size 3 × 4 cm (called “half business-card size” in Korea), the usual size for resumes.
Check the employer’s or institution’s own instructions; some now ask for 3.5 × 4.5 cm instead.

Japanese passport (35×45 mm)

Size 45 mm high × 35 mm wide, without a border.
Face from the crown to the chin: 32–36 mm; 2–6 mm between the top edge and the crown.
Taken within 6 months of applying, only the applicant, facing forward.
Plain background with no shadows.

Japanese My Number Card (35×45 mm)

Size 45 mm high × 35 mm wide.
Check the application form for the full requirements before submitting.

Japanese resume (30×40 mm)

Size 40 mm high × 30 mm wide, the standard for Japanese resumes (rirekisho).
Follow any size the employer specifies instead.

Japanese driver’s licence (24×30 mm)

Size 30 mm high × 24 mm wide.
Check your prefecture’s licensing centre for the full requirements.

US passport / visa (2×2 in)

Printed size 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm).
Head from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head: 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm).
Colour photo taken in the last 6 months.
Face the camera directly with a neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed.

UK passport (35×45 mm)

Printed size 45 mm high × 35 mm wide.
Face from chin to crown: 29–34 mm.
Plain, light-coloured background such as cream or light grey.
Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open; taken within the last month.
Digital photos: at least 600 × 750 pixels.
