About Hanji

Why “Hanji”?

Hanji is traditional Korean paper made from mulberry bark, known for lasting a very long time without falling apart. We wanted tools that behave like the paper on your desk: you do the work where you are, and nothing gets sent anywhere. So that is what we called them.

Why no uploads?

Turning one iPhone photo into a JPG, or putting a scan of your ID into a PDF, usually means uploading it to a site you have never heard of. Most of the time nothing bad happens, but the person uploading has no way of knowing where that file ends up or how long it stays there.

Browsers are now fast enough to do this work on their own, so we built Hanji without a server that receives files at all. It is not that we choose not to look at your files; there is simply no way for us to.

Check it yourself

You do not have to take our word for it. Press F12 to open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. You will see the page load its own code, and no request carrying your photo or document going out. Once the page has loaded, conversion keeps working even with the internet switched off.

What we don’t do

• We don’t ask you to sign up.
• We don’t store or look at your files.
• We don’t put watermarks on your results.

The site is paid for by the ads shown on its pages. What those ads may use is explained in the privacy policy.

What isn’t there yet

• Everything runs on your own device, so very large files can fail on older phones.
• The ID photo tool gets the size and head position right, but it cannot remove backgrounds yet.
• Compressing a PDF with “Fit a target size” turns pages into images, so the text can no longer be selected.
