About the formats
HEIC
HEIC (HEIF) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads. It keeps high quality at about half the size of JPG, but Windows, many websites and older Android devices cannot open it without extra software.
PNG
PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos saved as PNG are much larger than JPG.
Frequently asked questions
- Will converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?
- No. PNG is lossless, so no further quality is lost during conversion. Any compression artifacts already in the original HEIC will remain, though.
- Will the PNG file be smaller?
- Usually larger, often several times. HEIC saves space with lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel as-is.
- What about Live Photos?
- The moving part of a Live Photo is stored as a separate video file, so only the still photo inside the HEIC file is converted.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. All conversion happens inside your browser with JavaScript. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working even if you go offline.
- Is it free? Are there any limits?
- It is completely free, with no sign-up and no watermark. How many and how large files you can convert depends only on your device’s memory.
- What happens to the photo’s location data (EXIF)?
- Converted files do not contain metadata such as GPS location or camera details, so this tool also works as a quick way to strip location data before sharing. The image orientation is preserved.
- Does it work on my phone?
- Yes, it works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet and other modern browsers. Very large images may fail on phones because of memory limits.
- Doesn’t my iPhone already convert photos to JPG when I upload them?
- Safari on iPhone often converts photos to JPG when you pick them from the Photos library. This tool is most useful for HEIC files that were moved to a computer via AirDrop, USB or a cloud drive.
