About the formats
PNG
PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos saved as PNG are much larger than JPG.
JPG
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files stay small, but it has no transparency and quality drops a little every time it is re-saved.
Frequently asked questions
- Will converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?
- Slightly, because JPG uses lossy compression. At the default 90% quality the difference is hard to see, and you can lower the quality to make files smaller.
- Will the JPG file be smaller?
- For photos and screenshots, usually much smaller. Simple graphics with only a few colours can already be smaller as PNG.
- Is transparency kept?
- No. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose PNG or WebP if you need to keep it.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. All conversion happens inside your browser with JavaScript. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working even if you go offline.
- Is it free? Are there any limits?
