How to make the photo
- Check that the right photo type is selected.
- Add a photo taken facing the camera in front of a plain, light wall. Phone photos, including HEIC, work.
- Drag and zoom so the top of the head (not the hair) sits on the blue line and the chin falls inside the shaded band.
- Download the photo for online forms, or the print sheet to print at a photo counter.
Good to know
- When printing, turn off “fit to page” and print at 100% (actual size), or the photos will not come out at the right size.
- There is no background removal. Stand in front of a white or light, plain wall with no shadows for the best result.
- Hold the phone about 1.5 m away at eye level so the face is not distorted.
Photo requirements
Why head size matters
Official photo rules describe the print size and how large the head must appear, measured from the crown (the top of the skull, not the hair) to the chin. Getting the head size right is the most common reason photos are rejected, which is why the guides show the allowed range directly on the photo.
UK passport (35×45 mm)
- Printed size 45 mm high × 35 mm wide.
- Face from chin to crown: 29–34 mm.
- Plain, light-coloured background such as cream or light grey.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open; taken within the last month.
- Digital photos: at least 600 × 750 pixels.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a photo made here always be accepted?
- This tool gets the size and head position right. The other requirements, such as expression, lighting, background and glasses, depend on the photo itself, so always check the issuing office’s current rules before submitting.
- How do I print it?
- Take the print sheet file to a photo counter, a self-service kiosk or an online print service and print it as a 4 × 6 inch (or L size) photo. Print at actual size without scaling, then cut along the grey lines.
- Can it make the background white?
- Not yet. Background removal needs either uploading your photo to a server or a heavy AI model, and this site does not upload photos. Take the photo against a plain, light wall instead.
- Is my photo sent to a server?
- No. Cropping and the print layout happen entirely in your browser; your photo never leaves this device, which matters for ID photos.
- Does it work on my phone?
- Yes. Drag with one finger to move the photo and pinch with two fingers to zoom.
